My Parsley

My parsley is being eaten up, and not by humans! Three caterpillars are the culprits.
I have to admit, they are pretty:
But destructive:
Those stalks were full of parsley just yesterday!

Does anyone know what kind of caterpillars these are?

  1. Not 100% sure, but I think it's the caterpillar of a swallowtail butterfly. Bummer about the parsley, though. :(

  2. They are a swallowtail, blue with black. I put them in a jar of same leaves they were feasting on once and they turned into cocoons. I kept them in the kitchen and when they came out their wings were cold and felt wet for several hours. I let them go in the greenhouse as it was winter by then. At least I got to see the process. If you let them finish the parsley, they will climb down and fat frogs will be waiting to eat them. Your parsley will come back as the plant won't die.

  3. Thanks for telling me what these guys are. I'm going to let them eat the parsley. I figure they need it and I'm happy to share!

  4. Gorgeous creature! I'd say it's worth it, although I hate that you'll have to buy parsley.
