Tulsa State Fair

The Husband and I went to the Tulsa State Fair Monday afternoon.

We each ate a corn dog. Plus, we shared a pork chop sandwich from the Oklahoma Pork Council.  Oh. My. Lord. Delicious!

I've always been a big fan of the fair, but I said to The Husband this time that I might be "over" it. I'm 52, so it's taken me approximately 51 years to make that statement.

Why, do you ask, am I over my local fair?

It's because within the hour we arrived, we saw multiple examples of all the worst stereotypes of Oklahoma residents.

Do you attend your local fairs?

Are they large or small?

Are still happy with them or are you "over" them?

He Deserves A Post By Himself (Cake Gnome)

In my opinion, the best entry in the Tulsa State Fair Sugar Arts Show:

It's a gnome!

A yard gnome!

Sugar Arts Show

Bless The Husband's heart, he went with me to the Oklahoma Sugar Arts Show at the Tulsa State Fair. We saw beautiful works of art.

Drapes made of sugar:

A TV dinner. Doesn't it look delicious?

A dragon with castle:

Look at these flowers:

Look at the recipe cards and the knife:

Look at this sweet Halloween cake:

One of my favorites this year is this drawer of jewelry:

I love, love, love the jewelry. But, look at the baby clothes:

Closer:

Again, closer:

There are many, many more photos I could show you, but I won't.

If you did not attend the Oklahoma Sugar Arts Show in 2010, I would recommend you plan to attend in 2011. It is fantastic and fabulous!

I Bought A New Hat!

I went to the Tulsa State Fair Sunday with The Husband.

I bought a new hat. What do you think? I like it.
My head is big and my hair is really, really thick, so finding a hat that fits is difficult. I'm very, very happy with this hat!

Also, I truly love the smiley face balloons. Truly, I do.

We saw The Sister and her family, while we were goofing at the fair.

Sweet baby Lauren also bought a new hat:
She has Aunt Cindy's sharp, witch chin. Bless her heart.

I'll have more posts from the fair this week.

A Fun Game For Tulsa Peeps

Here's a fun game:

1) Attend the Tulsa State Fair

2) Find these balloons:
3) Take your picture with the balloons.

4) Post the picture as your Twitter, Facebook or Blog picture for the duration of the Tulsa State Fair.

I have, will you?

What's for Dinner, Dear?

My answer to the question on Tuesday evening was, "Let's go to the fair." Look, endless possibilities on the midway:
How do they get the mashed potatoes to stay on the stick? We had to try the deep fried Mac & Cheese. It was surprisingly tasty. I didn't say healthy, I said tasty! How do they get it into these shapes? What the heck is a fatball????
Mystery meat on a stick?
Chocolate covered bacon. No way!
We had to try the chocolate covered bacon. It wasn't bad. Sweet, salty and bacony (is that a word)? Definitely just a once a year, fair food.

Don't tell anyone that you will be able to buy it year round at Old World Confectionery in Tulsa (25th & Harvard) beginning after the fair.
If you don't like your bacon as dessert, you can have it as the main course.
Rest assured, with all the bad food choices at the fair, very few people were opting for the low carb offering.
It was a perfect night at the fair. Weather was cool and crowds were sparse. We agreed it might have been the best night we've ever had at the fair.

All except for the absence of the annual butter sculpture. That was the only negative!

Tulsa State Fair - 1st 2009 Visit

I went to the Tulsa State Fair early this morning, with my friend Monica.

We went specifically to see all the cakes entered in the Oklahoma Sugar Arts Show and the Grand National Wedding Cake Competition and the annual butter sculpture (the artist sculpts a life size person or thing in hundreds of pounds of butter.)

The theme of the 2009 cake show is "Of Sea and Shore."

There were a considerable number of traditionally shaped cakes decorated with shells, coral, fish, mermaids, birds -- all made of SUGAR.

There were also numerous cakes that took on other shapes. Following are some that caught my eye. I call this one the crazy cake.
A watering can with flowers.
False teeth!
And my FAVORITE -- Surf and Turf! Everything is edible, the placemat, napkin, utensils, plate and food.
I admire people who have the patience to perfect this type of baking art. Loved it!

We then went looking for the butter sculpture and didn't find it. We stopped and asked two volunteers in the competitive exhibits area and we were informed there is NO BUTTER SCULPTURE THIS YEAR!

Read that again.

NO BUTTER SCULPTURE!

There's always a butter sculpture! Who made this decision? Why?

The two very nice volunteers were collecting comments from people expressing their disappointment at this decision. Of course, we expressed our displeasure.

Won't seem much like the fair this week without the butter sculpture.
