The Husband and I departed the house on Sunday with the car odometer displaying 34,990 and the clock displaying 11:52 a.m.
Road Trip 2012 has officially begun.
Where are we going and how will we get there? For those answers, you will have to visit the clipboard every day as I document our journey.
Our first detour off the highway had us driving through downtown Sallisaw, OK. We hoped to meander through the antique mall we saw advertised on a highway billboard. Unfortunately, the mall was not open.
Our first stop was on the side of I-40. (The photo is blurry, but stopping on the side of the highway feels a bit dangerous so we did the best we could.)
On down the road, we decided to drive through historic Van Buren, AR and stop at an antique shop or two. Unfortunately, none were open.*
We got back on the road and caught up with the storm we had been following since leaving Oklahoma. The rain was steady and hard. We decided a couple of years ago that while on vacation we would never push ourselves to drive in a storm to get to our next destination. It's much safer to pull over and wait it out. This decision was driven home when we passed a wreck on the highway.
We pulled into Conway, AR shortly before 5:00pm and checked into the local Best Western. Conveniently located across the parking lot was a Golden Corral. After resting for a while, we decided to go there for a quick meal since it was still raining and a thunderstorm watch had been issued.
The Husband and I haven't been to a GC (as our neighbor calls it) in years, if ever. The big draw there these days is "The Chocolate Wonderfall," yes a wonderfall.
Early to bed means early to rise. Where shall we go tomorrow and what shall we see? I can't wait to find out!
End of day odometer reading = 35,234
* I was very disappointed we were not able to shop at any antique malls. Why on earth would they be closed on Sundays? When do they expect people to patronize their stores? I'm certainly glad the two malls where I have booths are both open on Sunday.
